DR JONATHAN TANDOS
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST

Life brings many challenges, including mental health and relationship difficulties, issues of self and identity, and stages of growth and change.  We are all unique and our reactions and pathways through our challenges are also unique. Working with a sensitive, dynamic and flexible therapist can lead to profound healing, growth and change. This is my commitment to working with people in therapy.

I am a fully qualified, professionally registered Clinical Psychologist (AHPRA, APS, AusPATH), and have been working as a therapist for 23 years.  The last 19 have been in private practice in Naarm (Melbourne, Australia) where I continue to work. I specialise in working with men and masculinity, LGBTQIA+ people, highly sensitive and creative people, in cross-cultural and transpersonal work, and with people seeking authenticity, purpose and meaning in their lives. I am a Clinical Supervisor and welcome enquiries for supervision from fully qualified and registered therapists in the LGBTIQA+ and generalist psychology and psychotherapy areas. Please consider my main specialty areas and therapeutic approaches.

MEN AND MASCULINITY

Many heterosexual men today are caught between outdated views and expectations of what it is to be a man and unclear alternatives, which has led to increasing experiences of marginalisation.

Such men were never taught how to experience or process emotion without suppressing it, or expressing it as anger.  Models of being a man can be constrained and rigid, leaving little room for adaptation to modern life.

I work with straight men who wish to reclaim feeling, and live with integrity, emotional depth, interpersonal skill, and vitality.  Therapy with me is practical, experiential, goal driven and respectful.  I neither shame masculinity nor overlook harmful behaviour or personal responsibility.

In therapy we work on building grounded masculinity, which includes self-awareness, emotional regulation, capacity for intimacy, and strength that is stable and sustained rather than reactive.  Men can then learn to better navigate identity, relationships, fatherhood, career pressure, and community.

QUEER CLIENTS

Throughout my career a primary specialisation of mine has been working with LGBTQIA+ people. This has included working extensively with gay and lesbian people, HIV health, queer and trans identities and development including neurodivergence, providing assessment for gender diverse people for gender affirming surgery, and working with bisexual, pansexual and asexual people, polyamorous people, in kink community and with sex workers.

I have always maintained a curious, respectful, empathic and compassionate approach to welcoming all individuals in my practice.  For queer and all non-normative identified people I provide a safe environment where they know they are in the right place for healing and personal development.

MAIN THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES

I work with the entire individual on a personality, nervous system and identity level, with a depth orientation towards sustained, lasting change and inner transformation.

My main therapeutic modality is IFS (Internal Family Systems), in addition to psychodynamically oriented psychotherapy, mindfulness, clinical hypnosis, ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), dreamwork, somatic therapies and creative therapy approaches.  Therapy is tailored to individual clients’ preferences and the approaches that are most conducive to their progress.
